The 16-hour practical
Two days, on a range and in a room set up as a courtroom, for you: the officer who holds the five classroom courses and needs the two practical courses to finish.
The rule
Five of the seven courses may be taught online. Two may not.
TCOLE’s curriculum for the Court Security Specialist certificate states that courses 21001 through 21005 may be developed for online delivery, and that 21006 and 21007 are prohibited from online delivery because of their demonstration requirements. So you can do the classroom hours wherever you like. The scenario day and the live-fire day you have to show up for.
That is not a burden. It is the part of the certificate that says you can do the job, and it is the only part anybody will ask you about.
The two days
TCOLE 21006 · 8 hours
Force-on-force with marking-ammunition weapons and protective gear, in a room set up as a courtroom or an office. The scenarios are built from real events. You work them with officers from other agencies, under stress, and then the room talks about what happened. Nobody can do this one alone.
TCOLE 21007 · 8 hours
Movement, tactics, stress shooting and working with the officer next to you, on a range with a certified firearms instructor running the line. Then what to do after the fight, which is the part most courses skip.
How it is delivered
Every hosted forty-hour class runs the scenario day and the range day as days four and five. You register for those two days only, at $99 per day, and take them alongside the officers finishing the full week. Drop-in seats are limited by the range and the gear, and they do not count toward the class minimum of 15 paid registrations.
An agency, an academy or a council of governments with a group of officers who all need the two days can host a two-day practical on its own. It is put on the calendar by request. Ask, and it will be built around what your region has.
Scheduled classes
Drop-ins ride the forty-hour classes below on their last two days. Register for the practical days only.
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
